Kele at Electric Brixton (17/11/12)

19/12/2011

Being a Bloc Party fan and a Kele fan are two separate things. Whilst you absolutely love Kele and his solo album, there’s a part of you that is praying that a: “for one night only, please welcome my band Bloc Party to the stage” moment happens.

But Bloc Party dreams aside, Kele, who came on dressed as a vicar, put on a really lively show. After what seemed like a lifetime when the unnamed support DJ played a 40-minute set of non-stop noise, Kele’s unusual get up was a joyous break from the sheer boredom of staring at gio-goi trousers for 40 minutes.

Gig Review: Cut Copy at the Roundhouse (27/10/11)

29/10/2011

Image from waking up to

After a world tour of their debut album Zonoscope (2011), the electro-pop playing graphic designers, Cut Copy, came back to London to play at the Roundhouse. This was my second time seeing Cut Copy in less than a year and so I could compare the gig with the one at the HMV Forum. A major distinction was that the set was less theatrical than the HMV forum gig in which they came out of a giant door that remained centre stage throughout the gig. Read more…

Drive

15/10/2011

This week I saw the film Drive. Drive is about a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) who drives criminals to and from heists. He gives them a five minute window in which, if he needs to, he will help. However, before or after that five minutes he is not involved and will leave the scene if need be. But this all changes when he meets a woman in his apartment and her ex-convict husband who needs his driving capabilities, he gets involved beyond the five minutes and in over his head.

Why a film on a music blog?

Song on repeat: Cults

07/10/2011

It was very difficult to find a song on repeat this week because I really have just been listening to Youth Lagoon’s album permanently. It’s a really great album that is growing on me more and more with every listen and the lack of information about them on the internet is also excruciating. I need to know who the girl singer is.

Anyway, I missed out on getting tickets for Cults again. They’re a band that I tried to see last year and ended up in Camden when I should have been in Soho, and the gig was at 2pm not 7:30pm, it was a big mess.

This time however, their gig at XOYO has sold out already! So now whenever I listen to them I feel pangs of regret for not getting in their sooner on seetickets.

Youth Lagoon – The Year of Hibernation

03/10/2011

Youth Lagoon’s debut album ‘The Year of Hibernation’ (2011) is an album that I am really excited about at the moment.

Youth Lagoon remind me of the bands Lightning Dust, Beach House and on some songs, The XX.

They have a very unique and peaceful tone, but the sound is not too dreary.

Monday Mood Mixtape 2: Summer Déjà Vu

03/10/2011

Summer has made an unexpected return to England in late September/October. So hot is the weather here (reaching highs of 29°C in London) that I am in summer dresses and shorts nearly every day, near fainting on the tube and praying for some English rain.

In fact, I even managed to get a tan in October. Awesome.

For this Monday’s mixtape I have decided to make a list of songs that remind me of summer and make me feel good. Some of these bands I saw at festivals and whenever I hear them I am immediately transported to this warm, summery feeling of pure music joy in a muddy field. There’s no other way to describe it without sounding silly, but really music has the possibility to make you relive a feeling and these songs make me relive a wonderful one.

  1. She’s Got You High – Mumm-ra
  2. Kiss of Life – Friendly Fires
  3. Waves – Yeasayer
  4. Heartbreaker – MSTRKRFT
  5. Electric Feel – MGMT
  6. Miami – Foals
  7. South Carolina – Tennis
  8. Shangri-la – M. Ward
